Original Medicare covers many of your health care needs, but it doesn’t cover everything. Even with Parts A and B, there will still be out-of-pocket costs, including copays, coinsurances and deductibles. To help cover these costs, many people enroll in an additional plan – called Medigap or Medicare supplement policies – offered by Medicare-approved private insurance companies.
Medigap – Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plans
- Available through private insurance companies, but the government defines the standards.
- Covers some or all of the expenses not covered by Parts A and B. (Also called “Medicare supplement policies.”)
- Prices vary widely by company, even for identical coverage.
- You cannot have a Medigap policy if you have a Medicare Advantage plan.
Please note: Independent Health does not currently offer MediGap policies.
